Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and had a hand in a third goal as Real Madrid crushed Marseille 3-0 to maintain their perfect start to the Champions League group phase on Wednesday. The Spanish champions failed to break the deadlock in the first half at Santiago Bernabeu but roared in the second to brush aside Marseille. In-form Portuguese winger Ronaldo, who also notched a brace in Real's 5-2 win over Zurich in their first Group C match, opened the scoring on 58 minutes. He raced onto a long ball from defender Pepe to break clear of defense and smartly roll the ball under Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda. Ronaldo, who continued his impressive displays after joining from Manchester United in the close season, was felled by Souleymane Diawara inside the area to earn Real a penalty on 61 minutes.
Milan stunned by Zurich Diawara received a red card and Brazilian playmaker Kaka stepped up to convert the spot-kick and double the Spanish giants' lead. Ronaldo wrapped up the victory three minutes later with an easy tap-in after a neat exchange of passes between Kaka and Karim Benzema. Real are on top of Group C with maximum six points from two games, three ahead of second-placed AC Milan who suffered a shocking 1-0 home defeat to FC Zurich. Finnish defender Hannu Tihinen scored the winner after 10 minutes in brilliant fashion as he back-heeled a corner past Milan keeper Marco Storari. The Swiss side claimed their first three points while Marseille remain at the bottom after slumping to two consecutive defeats.
