AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani voiced concerns about the results of Italian clubs in the Europa League. Lazio lost to Austria's Salzburg and Roma were defeated by Swiss side Basel in their first group stage games of Europe's secondary competition. Genoa were the only Italian side to claim an opening win after beating Slavia Prague 2-0. Galliani fears the disappointing results of Italian teams could prompt European governing body FIFA to reduce their spots in the Champions League in favor of German teams. Italy have four representatives in the elite competition while Germany have three. "We need to play not just for ourselves in Europe but also for Italian football," Galliani was quoted as saying by Football Italia on Friday. "Luckily the German teams have also not done very well, but there is a serious risk that Italy could lose a place [in the Champions League] by continuously getting negative results." Serie A has suffered a drop in class in recent years, mainly because of persistent financial problems. "It is my intention to propose to the Lega Calcio that they make an economic contribution to those clubs who get points in the Europa League," Galliani added.
