A Paul Scholes header gave Manchester United a 1-0 away victory over Turkey's Besiktas in their Champions League group stage opener on Tuesday. The former England midfielder notched the winner in the 77th minute to break down a stubborn Besiktas defense. Besiktas keeper Hakan Arikan parried a header from winger Nani into the path of Scholes, who headed home. "We expected it to be tough and it was tough as Besiktas are a very hard team to play against. They are organized and the fans gave great backing to team," United manager Alex Ferguson told Turkish broadcaster Star. "It required good concentration and patience and I think for most of the game we were quite good at that." In the other Group B game, a hat-trick from Grafite gave Germany's Wolfsburg a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow. The Brazilian striker celebrated his Champions League debut with a superb performance against the Russians. "It was a special night, an unforgettable night," he told reporters after the game.
