A distraught Edwin Van der Sar saw his 14-year international career ended by a 3-1 defeat to Russia in the EURO 2008 quarter-finals. The 37-year-old played his fourth EURO finals, but his dreams of ending his Dutch career on a high were shattered by a superb Russia side. "Until this match, it all was nice and we received a lot of international praise, but we could not take that extra step towards the semi-final and final—and that hurts," he said. "The good feeling just was not present today. In the first half they really put us under pressure. "In extra time I really had the idea that we could go through if we managed to get into the penalty shootout." Van der Sar, who has 128 caps for Holland, helped Manchester United win the Premiership and Champions League double last season.
