Ahmed Hossam's 'Mido' proposed move to Blackburn Rovers almost collapsed after the Premiership side signed Porto striker Benni McCarthy on Friday. The South African international penned a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee, Blackburn said on their official website. "We tried to sign Benni 12 months ago and we have been tracking the situation since then," the club's chairman John Williams said. Blackburn boss Mark Hughes was hopeful of signing Egyptian striker Mido from AS Roma after his impressive displays during an 18-month loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Hughes set his sights on landing McCarthy after failing to agree a fee with Roma regarding the transfer. McCarthy is the third striker to join Blackburn following the arrivals of Francis Jeffers and Jason Roberts.
