Klinsmann delighted with opening victory
Published in FilGoal on 09 - 06 - 2006

Germany manager Jurgen Klinsmann said that he is happy with their 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in the World Cup opener that took place on Friday.
“We're just delighted we've picked up our first three points. It was a tremendous game, given that it was the opening match at the World Cup,” Klinsmann was quoted as saying by the official FIFA website after the match.
“Obviously we were going to see some nerves. We agreed we'd try and avoid yellow cards, and we succeeded in that. We wanted to put on a show for the fans, and that worked out well too,” he added.
Goals from Philipp Lahm and Torsten Frings and a brace from Miroslav Klose were more than enough to grab the victory for Germany, while Paulo Wanchope scored two goals for Costa Rica.
Klinsmann also hailed the players' performance and energy and said that he was pleased with the way they reacted to Costa Rica's goals.
“I was pleased at the way we recovered after conceding the goals. The mood in the dressing room is upbeat. We played at a high tempo, so you'll always see a few passes going astray, but there were plenty of positives from the game.”
“Philipp Lahm was tremendous, and so was Miroslav Klose on his birthday. This team has unbelievable energy,” Klinsmann said.
On the other hand, Costa Rica manager Alexandre Guimaraes insisted that his team gave a good performance in front of Germany, and said that they have a good chance of qualifying to the second round.
"We knew that today's game, quite apart from the result, would tell us what our chances were of progressing in the next couple of matches," Guimaraes said.
"Judging by our performance today I think we've got a really good chance of qualifying for the next round. Our hopes are still very high, the team is going to get better and we'll keep our chances alive," he added.
Guimaraes also praised Germany's performance and tactics and said he was happy that the players took advantage of the weak German defence to score the two goals.
"As for the game, I think Germany were very powerful and took their chances. I wouldn't say we made lots of mistakes. Two of their goals were absolutely brilliant."
"We played much better than in our warm-up games and that's important. I wasn't that surprised our goals came through the middle of the German defence. We knew exactly where to attack and we capitalised on that brilliantly," Guimaraes said.
Germany will next face Poland on Wednesday in Dortmund before taking on Ecuador on June 20th in Berlin, while Costa Rica will next play against Ecuador.
