Thierry Henry has been named player of the year by the English Football Writers' Association (FWA) for a record third time. The Arsenal international striker finished on top of the winners' list ahead of Chelsea defender John Terry and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, who came second and third respectively. "Henry is a deserving winner in a season when there have been several outstanding candidates, such as Terry, Rooney and (Steven) Gerrard," FWA chairman Paul Hetherington was quoted as saying by BBC. "Henry's achievement ranks him up there as the greatest player in the 59-year history of the award," he added.
The 28-year-old Frenchman has played a pivotal role in Arsenal's campaign towards their first ever appearance in the UEFA Champions League finals. He also became Arsenal's all-time leading goal scorer after surpassing Ian Wright's previous record. It is the third time Henry wins the award after scooping it in 2003 and 2004, beating Stanley Matthews, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and Gary Lineker who have won it twice. The Arsenal skipper will receive his award on May 11th in London.
