Beckham targets 100-caps mark
Published in FilGoal on 09 - 02 - 2006

England captain David Beckham put aside any talk of international retirement as the 30-year-old star revealed his hopes in exceeding the 100-caps mark with his country.
The Real Madrid midfielder, who made his debut with the England team in 1996, has already collected 86 caps with the team and plans to make more appearances during Euro 2008 as the team takes on a new coach.
Current England boss, Sven-Goran Eriksson announced he would step down from his post after the World Cup finals in Germany this summer.
"Whatever happens, I want to show the new manager I'm worth my place,” Beckham was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
"If I'm involved, I'll go over the 100-caps mark, which would be nice.”
"I'm not counting it down but it is a target I want to reach,” admitted the former Manchester United ace.
Only four players have appeared in more than 100 games for England those are Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright, with Shilton leading the list with 125 caps.
"I don't want to reach 100 and say, okay, I'll retire now,” explained Beckham.
"I don't want to finish before Euro 2008 and I'd love to go on to the 2010 World Cup but I don't think that will happen because I will be 35 by then."
Beckham's last international participation was in a friendly match against Argentina last November, which England won 3-2.
