CAIRO - Egyptian Ambassador to the UN Maged Abdelaziz has expressed optimism over the prospects of Egypt-Iran relations, describing the two nations as Muslim world heavyweights. “Iran and Egypt are two great and influential countries in the Islamic world, and we are very optimistic about the future of Tehran-Cairo ties,” the top Egyptian envoy told IRNA. Given the ongoing popular uprising in Egypt, Cairo is reassessing its relations with other countries, especially the ones which did not have close ties with Cairo in the past, he further explained. “We are very optimistic and hopeful over establishing relations with Iran, but it depends on how willing officials of both countries are,” Abdelaziz said. The Egyptian ambassador underlined that a series of preliminary arrangements have to be made first so that the “mission” to resume ties with the Islamic Republic is accomplished without a hitch. The senior Egyptian official also touched upon the latest developments in his country. Abdelaziz pointed out that the massive revolution currently underway in Egypt will lead to parliamentary and constitutional elections in the country. “This new constitution will fulfill people's ambitions,” the Egyptian UN ambassador opined. Egyptians launched the revolution against the regime of former strongman Hosni Mubarak in January, putting an end to his 30-year-long rule in February. The Egyptian dictator, charged with the killing of revolutionaries and abuse of power, is now in police custody in a hospital in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.
