CAIRO - Arab League chief Amr Moussa is pledging to fight corruption and turn Egypt into a modern, democratic state should he become the country's next president. A popular career diplomat and former foreign minister, Moussa has said he plans to run in Egypt's presidential election expected later this year. He spoke Tuesday night in front of a few hundred Egyptians in a cultural center in the upscale neighbourhood of Zamalek, saying he would "listen to the young people of Egypt." He suggested he would safeguard Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel but reconsider the terms of a controversial gas deal under which Egypt sells Israel 60 billion cubic feet (1.7 billion cubic meters) a year. Former President Hosni Mubarak stepped down Feb. 11 following 18 days of protests demanding his ouster after nearly 30 years in power.
