Egyptian TV anchor to stand trial
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 21 - 07 - 2010

CAIRO - The public attorney in Giza, south of Cairo, Wednesday charged a TV anchorman with the premeditated murder of his wife after he confessed to shooting her dead with his licensed gun during a fracas at the house early Tuesday.
Ihab Salah, 45, has admitted assaulting his 35-year-old wife, Magda Kamal, inside their house , security sources quoted the attorney, Hamada el-Sawi, as saying .
"The suspect... also told investigators that he opened fire at Magda after she insulted him and slapped him on the face," the sources quoted el-Sawi as saying .
Salah was charged with premeditated murder and possession of drugs, they added .
He is also accused of being in possession "of a few grammes" of hashish, the sources said.
They added that Magda's body had been found at the bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound in her head.
Salah, who killed his wife just hours before he was due to read the noon time news, told investigators that he argued with Magda and shot her in the head with a handgun he had inherited from his father, a retired police general .
"She bled and fell to the ground. I called the emergency police and the first aid to save her. But, they came 45 minutes late," Salah, who has been referred to the Criminal Court, told investigators at the crime scene. No date has been set for the trial yet .
Alerted by Magda's screams, her sister, who happened to be visiting with the victim on the night of the crime, tried to intervene but Salah chased her with the gun, the sources said .
Salah, who has been in custody since early Tuesday, told the investigators that he was not guilty .
"He has pleaded not guilty to the charge of premeditated murder, which is uncorroborated," the sources said .
Salah said that he did not intend to kill his wife
"I just had acted on the spur of the moment because Magda insulted me and said very bad words about my mother and sister," Salah told the investigators.
Neighbours told the police that couple were not on good terms lately and they were constantly fighting with one another over espousal issues such as money and Salah's alleged love affairs, the sources said
