CAIRO- Egyptian political activists staged late Monday a protest outside the Press Syndicate in central Cairo against the jailing of Magdi Ahmed Hussein, an Islamist journalist. The protest, the first by an independent group for him, demanded the immediate release of Hussein, wo is the secretary-general of the now-frozen Labour Party. The group has collected more than 3,000 signatures to press for the release of Hussein, jailed by a military tribunal in 2009 for illegally entering the Gaza Strip. Activists in the group say that Hussein's imprisonment has become irrelevant after President Hosni Mubarak last May orderred the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.
