PM follows up on Egypt's Future, New Delta projects
Published in Daily News Egypt on 28 - 08 - 2023

Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting on Monday to discuss the status of the Future of Egypt and New Delta projects. The meeting was held at the government headquarters in New Alamein City and was attended by Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and several government officials.
Madbouly emphasized the government's constant monitoring of the implementation of these national projects, which aim to cultivate and farm nearly two million feddans of land. He noted that the government is working to provide the necessary funding to complete the stages of the national agricultural production project "Egypt's Future" to expand the agricultural land and achieve food security.
The objectives of agricultural development efforts in Egypt include expanding the cultivated land, improving the productivity of farmland, developing irrigation systems and agricultural drainage methods, and focusing on strategic crops of national importance.
The Minister of Electricity reviewed the status of various electricity projects being implemented to support agricultural development projects. He said that these projects are one of the most important infrastructure pillars necessary to complete the agricultural development projects in their current and future stages.
The Minister of Planning and Economic Development reviewed the financing provided for agricultural development projects to complete the supporting infrastructure works in the electricity, communications, roads, and other sectors. She noted that productive sectors, especially agricultural production, are a priority for government spending during this phase, given their positive impact on increasing employment rates, driving economic growth, and securing food needs while reducing the import bill in this vital area.
The New Delta project is a mega project in the agricultural field that is being built on an area of more than one million feddan in the northwest coast of Egypt. The project includes the Egypt's Future project, which will add 15% new farmland to Egypt to be used to achieve food security. The project extends from the north of the oases to the south of Wadi El-Natrun, east and west of the Qattara Depression.
The New Delta project is expected to cost around $5bn and will be completed in three phases. The first phase, which is currently underway, will focus on developing the infrastructure for the project, including roads, canals, and irrigation systems. The second phase will involve the construction of dams and reservoirs to store water for irrigation. The third phase will be the actual cultivation of the land.
