Libya, Yemen conflicts are very complicated due to foreign interference: Ahmed Aboul Gheit
Algeria is ready to host Arab League summit
Published in Daily News Egypt on 23 - 06 - 2022

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that the conflicts in Libya and Yemen are very complicated, due to foreign interference that hinders peace agreements.
He added, in an exclusive interview with Algiers International Channel on Wednesday, that "extending the armistice in Yemen for two additional months could contribute to reaching a final ceasefire and the start of a political process," expressing his concerns "that the brothers in Libya are not yet able to reach a Libyan-Libyan understanding."
He also said the Algerian president is a wise person with deep thinking and great knowledge of the international situation, adding: "I agree with the Algerian president in regard with the international situation, the Palestinian cause, and the Arabs' need to achieve unity."
He continued: "Algeria is ready to host the Arab League summit," wishing that "the 31st Arab Summit will be successful."
He added: "The Arab leaders consult among themselves on the international situation and interact with it," noting that "there is a proposal between the General Secretariat of the League and Algeria, to hold a consultative meeting between Arab leaders, to be closed, within the framework of the Arab Summit," noting that "the closed consultative meeting It aims to increase coordination and cooperation between Arab leaders.
He pointed out: "Syria's participation in the Arab summit, when it takes place, will be through a great Arab consensus," saying: "I imagine that the coming months will witness an attempt towards Syria's participation in the Arab summit in Algeria."
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, he explained that the Arab Ministerial Contact Group is seeking to hold negotiations between Russia and Ukraine at the headquarters of the Arab League, declaring that the group will hold a new meeting in the coming days; to discuss holding negotiations between Russia and Ukraine aimed at a ceasefire.
The Arab League Secretary-General noted that "the losses of the Russian-Ukrainian war are reflected on the whole world," noting that "the Arabs are distancing themselves from this international escalation."
He warned that "the international situation is very dangerous, and any miscalculation may lead to armed confrontations between the major powers," saying that "the occurrence of armed confrontations between the major powers means a threat to use nuclear capabilities, and the Arabs have no eloquence in the conflict."
He stated: "the Russian Federation has a strategic ally, which is China, and that the Western world is talking openly about weakening Russia," adding that "the Arabs want the sovereignty and stability of their region and an end to the conflicts within it."
He reiterated that reaching a settlement for the Palestinian issue is the basis of Arab thinking, concluding: "We all desire to reach a settlement for the Palestinian issue, which is the basis of Arab thinking, and for 11 years the Palestinian issue has been set aside since what was falsely called the Arab Spring."
