Egyptian president says measure seeks to alleviate the suffering of disabled persons and help them integrate into all areas of society
Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi revealed plans to establish an industrial complex for prosthetic limbs. According to a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady, Al-Sisi called for the provision of an integrated system of high-level medical services for citizens with mobility disabilities on a sound scientific basis.
This came during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Kabbaj, and Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea that was held on Saturday.
The president said the measure seeks to alleviate the suffering of disabled persons and help them integrate into all areas of society.
Al-Sisi called for the integration of the efforts of all concerned authorities in the country and the use of distinguished foreign expertise in this field to establish a production line for prosthetic limbs in Egypt.
The president further directed the preparation of a comprehensive database to keep tabs on the number of individuals with mobility disabilities across the country, as well as the integration of academic disciplines related to prosthetic devices and physiotherapy into the curricula of modern scientific colleges recently established by the state within the framework of a series of new universities.
In this context, the president was briefed on the current efforts by the competent authorities to establish a comprehensive industrial complex for prosthetics, prosthetic devices, and movement aids in cooperation with international expertise and major international companies, as well as what has been reached through the specialised technical committees in this regard.
President's Advisor for Health and Preventive Affairs Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din; Assistant Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces El-Sayed El-Ghaly, Eid Mahmoud, the Adviser to the Minister of Defence for Medical Education and Prosthetic Devices; and Mohamed Ali, the Deputy Director of the Technical Research Department of the Armed Forces, also attended the meeting.
Furthermore, the ongoing cooperation and coordination between various stakeholders were also reviewed to research the number of people with mobility disabilities in the country and the targeted quantities of prosthetic limbs.
Moreover, the aspects required to run the medical system — ranging from factories and local workshops specialised in nutrition to medical cadres and technical labour — were discussed along with the international standards and necessary technical and medical specifications that need to be upheld in terms of manufacture and use.
