Motor accidents down by 23.6%, railway up 14% in 2018

Car accidents in Egypt declined by a total of 2,618 cases in 2018, compared to 2017, according to the bulletin issued recently by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The year 2018 witnessed 8,480 accidents which resulted in 3,087 deaths, 11,803 injuries, and 13,441 vehicles damaged.
In 2017, car and train accidents reached 11,098 incidents, resulting in 3,747 deaths and 11,998 injuries.
Returning to the causes of accidents, the CAPMAS revealed that the human factor denominated 76.8% of the number of accidents, while technical defects in vehicles stood at about 15.7% and the condition of roads at 2.7% of the total accidents in 2018.
On the other hand, car accidents rose to 2,044 accidents in 2018, compared to 1,793 in 2017 – a difference of 251 incidents at a rate of 14% – while the highest number of rail accidents was in the Delta (66.7%) or 1,364 accidents and 10.9% in central Egypt, worth 222 accidents.
Railway accidents resulted in 48 deaths in 2018, compared to 29 in 2017, at 65.5%, while the number of casualties rose to 140 cases, compared to 61 in 2017, a difference of 129.5%.
As for the causes of accidents, vehicle collisions with crossings had the largest share at 83%, and a total of 1,696 cases in 2018.
