26.8% decrease in deaths from Road accidents in H1 of 2017

The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued Sunday a report on road accidents in the first half (H1) of 2017.
The most important indicators were as follows:
The number of car accidents on all roads reached 5,836 incidents in H1 2017, compared to 7,101 incidents in the same period in 2016, a decrease of 17.8%, leading to 1,929 deaths, 7,217 injured, and 9,006 damaged vehicles.
Number of deaths reached 2,636 deaths in H1 2016 to 1,929 deaths in the same period of 2017, an increase of 26.8%. The number of injured persons fell from 8,865 in H1 2016 to 7,217 in the same period of 2017, a decrease of 18.6%.
The number of accidents on highways reached 805 accidents, 13.8% of all accidents. In governorates, 5,031 accidents occurred, 86.2% of the total number of accidents in H1 2017.
The average risk was 1.6% (deceased or injured / accident) in H1 2017 and 2016. The risk rate in governorates was 1.5% (deceased or injured / accident) and highways 2.1% (dead or injured / accident) in H1 2017.
The average severity of the accidents was 26.7% (deceased / 100 injured) in H1 2017, compared to 29.7% in the same period of 2016, while in governorates it was 26.6% (deceased / 100 injured) and on highways 27.4% (dead / 100 injured) in H1 2017.
January witnessed the highest number of accidents on all roads, with 1,069 accidents at 18.3%, followed by March with 1,042 incidents, representing 17.9% of the total number of incidents in H1 2017.
Human error is the main reason behind car accidents, accounting for 78.9% of them, followed by the technical condition of the vehicle (13.8%), then external components (air condition, lighting, etc.) (5.6%) in H1 2017.
Private cars are the most vehicles that caused accidents at 4,107 vehicles, 45.6% of the total number of vehicles causing accidents in H1 2017.
The number of train accidents increased from 590 accidents in H1 2016 to 793 accidents in the same period of 2017, an increase of 34.4%.
Train accidents are mostly due to vehicles crashing into train parts, at 606 cases, 76.4% of the total number of accident in H1 2017.
