5.8% increase in the volume of traded goods, while sand and salt support growth of exports
Published in Daily News Egypt on 02 - 04 - 2017

A report issued by the Damietta Port Authority (DPA) has showed a decline in the number of docked vessels at the port by 16% during February 2017, compared to February 2016. According to the report, the number declined from 237 during February 2016 to 199 in February 2017.
The volume of goods traded at the port increased by 5.8% in February 2017, compared to the same period of 2016.
The report showed an increase of 35% in the exports of general goods in February, compared to the same period in 2016—where the volume of exported goods increased from 436,700 tonnes in February 2016 to reach 590,300 tonnes in February 2017. This is an increase of 153,600 tonnes, on the back of an increase in the exported amounts of methanol, sand, and salt.
According to the report issued by the DPA for February 2017, the number of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled through the port has increased by 15.3% compared to February 2016.
The total amount of containers increased by 12.6% during the past year compared to 2015, registering an increase from 719,500 TEUs in 2015 to reach 810,300 TEUs during the past year.
The DPA revealed that the number of vessels received by the port during 2016 increased by 8% compared to 2015, where the number increased from 2,357 vessels in 2015 to 2,562 vessels during 2016. The report attributed the apparent increase to the increased number of dry bulk carriers by 46%.
The increase in the amount of exported methanol was 371.6% in 2016, compared to 2015. Exported quantities of methanol rose from 117,100 to 552,200 tonnes.
The exported amounts of fertiliser have increased from 1m tonnes in 2015 to 2.1m tonnes during 2016, an increase of 110%.
