Cameroon's national volleyball team defeats Egypt, qualifying for Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Cameroon defeated Algeria in the semi-finals, leading Egypt to face them Tuesday in the finals, the winner of which would go on to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics
The African Volleyball Qualifier held in Yaoundé, Cameroon concluded its events on Tuesday. Despite the subsequent turn of events, the Egyptian women's volleyball team started off well, winning against Kenya in the semi-finals with scores of 25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20 and 19-17 and a final score of 3-2. Cameroon defeated Algeria in the semi-finals, leading Egypt to face them Tuesday in the finals, the winner of which would go on to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Cameroon left victorious, beating Egypt with scores of 25-14, 27-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-7 and the final score being 3-2. Fortunately for Egypt, as the team came in second place, they still have the chance to qualify through the International Olympic Qualifier, which will include Colombia, Puerto Rico and Kenya, who came in third in the African Qualifier. In the African arena, this is a great victory for Cameroon as it is their first win at the African Volleyball Championships, established in 1976. In 1999 and 2013, Cameroon won second place in the African Volleyball Championships in Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya respectively. The African Volleyball Championships' bronze medals went to Cameroon in 1985, 1991, 2001, 2003, 2009, and 2015. These championships were celebrated in Tunis, Cairo, Port Harcourt in Nigeria, Nairobi, Batna in Algeria, and in Nairobi once again, respectively. At the 1987 African Volleyball Championship in Casablanca, Cameroon came in the fourth place. It also came in the fourth place at the 1993 African Volleyball Championship held in Llovin, Nigeria.
