Second round of elections sees 67 pct voter turnout, says SEC

CAIRO: The second round of parliamentary elections saw a 67 percent voter turnout, Councilor Abdel Moez Ibrahim, head of the Supreme Electoral Commission (SEC), said in a press conference Sunday.
Of the 18,831,29 registered voters, 12,529,237 cast their ballots in the governorates of Giza, Beni Suef, Menufiya, Sharqeya, Ismailia, Suez, Beheira, Sohag and Aswan.
Ibrahim said 994,830 votes were invalidated.
He explained that most violations and inefficiencies reported during the first round were significantly lower in the second round, lauding the police and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces' role in securing the elections.
During the press conference, Ibrahim addressed the attack on judges by military police in Sharqeya, quoting Major General Hamdy Badeen, head of the military police, who said that the armed forces respect the judiciary and appreciate the judges' role in supervising elections.
Badeen added that SCAF's security plan included protecting the judges and employees of polling station, according to Ibrahim.
Ibrahim saluted Egypt's judges, who are “working under very tough conditions.”
“Egypt is under attack and is facing attempts to pit the police and army and people against one another,” he said.
Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat emerged as the only winner thus far in the elections' second round in Menufiya, earning over 191,000 of the votes in his constituency.
Other candidates will have to compete in run-offs slated for December 21-22, when the party list votes in three constituencies in Beheira, Menufiya and Sohag.
