Egypt and Qatar have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Doha to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in the sale and import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as other areas of energy collaboration. The MoU was signed by Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, and Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, in the presence of Walid El Feqqi, Egypt's Ambassador to Doha, and Mahmoud Abdel Hamid, Executive Managing Director of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). According to official statements, the agreement represents a key step towards diversifying Egypt's natural gas supply sources and expanding frameworks for cooperation in securing LNG shipments. It aligns with Egypt's broader strategy to safeguard energy security by diversifying supply sources in parallel with efforts to boost domestic production, maximise added value, and reinforce the country's role as a regional hub for gas trading. The memorandum further consolidates the strategic partnership between Egypt and Qatar in the energy sector. QatarEnergy's activities in Egypt are currently focused on the Mediterranean Sea, where the company operates in six offshore exploration blocks. QatarEnergy also plans to inject new investments over the next five years and drill a number of exploratory wells in cooperation with several major international energy companies. In a related development, EGAS and QatarEnergy signed the terms of an executive mechanism governing the supply of a number of Qatari LNG cargoes to Egypt. The shipments are scheduled for delivery to the Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports, in accordance with the agreement concluded between the two parties. The executive mechanism was signed on behalf of the Egyptian side by Mahmoud Abdel Hamid, Chairman of EGAS, and on behalf of the Qatari side by Abdullah Ahmed Al Husseini, Executive Vice President for Marketing at QatarEnergy.
