COFFEE TALK: Gossip, right out of a soap opera
Published in Daily News Egypt on 07 - 07 - 2007

"Do you know that I saw a man in a niqab in Heliopolis yesterday? gasped Heba."You saw what? asked Yasmine.
This particular coffee talk session kicked off quite fast leaving me no time to think of actually ordering coffee.
Nodding, Heba answered, "A man dressed in a niqab. He lifted the niqab to show some leg, hair, shoes and all.
Shocked, Yasmine shrieked and said, "How scary. Maybe he was trying to blow up a place. Oh my god, that just freaks the hell out of me. The mere thought that there are people out there that do these things.
Laughing, Heba said, "I ran like never before. Ran and ran and didn't look behind me.
I caught a waiter with one hand off the keyboard, keeping my ears perked and my eyes on the two young ladies sitting in front of me. This proved to be harder than I imagined, so I focused on just ordering my first cup of coffee.
A couple walked in and the girl's eyes were obviously red from crying. I dropped the first conversation, and listened to the next.
"Rania, enough crying, I can't take this any longer. Please stop, whispered Ahmed as he sat down and made room for her next to him.
She asked with a shaky voice, "Ahmed can someone really be in love with two people at the same time?
"He told me he loves me, that the way his hand fits into mine is perfect, and that it could never be wrong because it felt so right. Can all that go away because he met someone else at a time he got angry with me?
Patting her back, Ahmed said, "Khalas, forget him, he does not even deserve you.
Crying again, "Can you believe he told me to take my time to get over the hurt of the break up so after we could be friends? What nerve, especially with his new conservative partner, friendship is not an option.
"All men are the same. Anyway, what did you expect from someone like him? His mom is domineering and his family is very conservative. Of course he won't marry someone liberal like you, who goes out and drinks. This kind of man would rather marry for appearances, even if he ends up unhappy. He is not a risk-taker and he will choose what is easy and guaranteed, even if he kills his heart.
"But I feel him everywhere I go, I dream of him. I felt that there was someone else before I knew for sure. How can I feel that way if he doesn't love me? "
Two children running by distracted me. I ordered another coffee.
"Rania, please don't cry you're breaking my heart. I know this is not the right time, but I love you, and I cannot see you like this. He doesn't deserve you.
Rania stopped crying and looked up, "How can you say that about your best friend?
When a group of women that looked like they walked out of a Gezira Club fashion show sat next to me, I turned my complete attention to them.
"Shofti ya FouFou, that girl just has such a bad eye, Nada said in confidence.
"I mean who ever heard of a Mercedes not starting up? Breaking down for no reason? I know it's that eye of hers.
Laughs and giggles.
"Ask Lamia. Her wedding was so sad and empty. Even though the place was nice, no one seemed happy for her, she even seemed angry.
Looking disappointed, Lamia said, "Yeh, not many people like her.
"And she is such a copycat. I told her I am moving the kids to CAC next year, next thing I know she is filing out applications for her kids, Nada said.
Pointing and laughing at the same time, Foufou added, "Did you forget the car her husband got as soon as Amr changed his car and got that black BMW? The same exact car.
Looking around for some soul food, I found nothing and asked for the bill.
