LAGOS: Nigeria arrested 6 people who reportedly were fraudulently registering and selling pre-registered SIM cards to residents in the country, in violation of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) requirements for new SIM cards in the country. The arrests have highlighted the ongoing battle between the NCC, telecom operators and retailers in the country. The NCC has called on all telecom providers in Nigeria to “evolve a system of spotting pre-registered SIM cars, which are being sold on the streets in contravention of the SIM card registration guidelines. Head of the Enforcement Unit of the NCC, Efosa Idehen, said “those who engaged in such nefarious activity are destroying the database the NCC is building for Nigeria." It also comes on the heels of the NCC demanding that telecom operators do not push out new promotions until they have improved their overall customer service experience. No timetable was given as to how long companies would be barred from promotions in the country.
