NEW DELHI: The story of a booming India's rejection of the female sex continues. This time, a 30 year-old woman in New Delhi was reportedly poisoned because she gave birth to a girl child, according to the police here. The mother, Ishaq Parveen is now fighting for life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narayanhospital in the capital. Her father Sikander Malik, who has now filed a formal criminal complaint against Ishaq's husband, Javed Tariq, accusing the latter of poisoning her after she delivered a girl nearly two months back. Javed had hospitalized her on Friday, claiming that Ishaq had accidentally consumed a poisonous substance and had since disappeared. “A complaint has been registered. We will start investigating the moment the victim regains consciousness and gives usher statement,” a police official said. Women in India though emancipated to some extent, have largely been a persecuted lot in the patriarchal society here. From female foeticide to witch-burning, violence crimes against women in India and the social apathy to victims of rape, sexual assault even divorce, violence against women remains one big blimp on India's success story.
