SANA'A: Since the beginning of the popular uprising, which shook Yemen to the core, and saw the ouster of decades' long President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a group of young intellectuals and activists got together, organizing their own “resistance movement” against political oppression and censorship. Hardened internauts and savvy media geeks, the apolitical group organized itself under the banner SupportYemen, determined to campaign for the Yemen they wanted to see take shape, refusing to abandon their fight now that Saleh has been ousted. The heteroclite team, which is composed of journalists, video-photographer, web designers, bloggers and activists have proven countless times over that Yemen was indeed a land of hidden treasure where talents where waiting to be discovered. With SupportYemen it is the hope of an entire nation which is being exposed, a clear testimony that not only Yemen is ready for change but that it is implementing change by the sheer will and determination of its youth. The group launched in October last year their campaign, “Break the silence” which through a series of videos emphasized its determination to continue demanding what it originally set out to achieve – equal rights, liberty, freedom from oppression and a dignified life. “Our goal is to support the peaceful movement in Yemen that aims to establish a democratic civic state where the constitution gives people freedom, equality and social justice to every citizen,” said @NoonArabia, one the founding members. “We have no leader as we discuss and plan together as a team,” she added. Fiercely independent as they do not receive funds from any political group or organization, Support Yemen will continue to operate through volunteer work. Human Rights Minister Hooria Mashour announced recently through Twitter that she was supporting SupportYemen's efforts.
