LAGOS: The National Information Technology Development Agency of Nigeria has proposed to create 45,000 new jobs in the next four years, leveraging on the country's huge potential. In the first three years of implementation, the NITDA outsourcing program was expected to create about 10,000 jobs in the Information Technology and non-IT related fields. This national outsourcing program is majorly aimed at improving the country's e-readiness capacity and IT diffusion. However, in a statement, NITDA said the government had recognized that the basic ingredients for the development of a vibrant IT outsourcing sector were available in Nigeria. They added that these tools would be adequately exploited to provide new jobs in the nation. “Government recognizes that the basic ingredients for the development of a vibrant IT outsourcing sector are available in Nigeria – abundance of cheap and readily available skills and expertise, especially fluency in English language, which is the predominant language for global commerce, potential market size etc. And accordingly, intends to exploit this advantage to facilitate the development of the sector to harness the benefits of an outsourcing based economy,” the document stated. Sources revealed that the agency is rallying industry stakeholders and re-focusing them for the work ahead. It also plans to startup national broad-based programs such as standardization and policy intervention to curb unemployment in the country.
