Published in Bikya Masr on 14 - 03 - 2012

LAGOS: Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria has committed over N3 million Naira in form of competitive scholarships to 15 talented full time undergraduate students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). This is in an attempt to bridge the business divide through education for those students who are committed to careers in ICT and related fields.
The purpose of the Huawei ICT Scholarship Scheme is to support undergraduates from departments of computer engineering, computer science, electrical electronics, physics electronics and systems engineering with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.0 and above.
Wei Chengmin, the company's President in Western Africa Region said the scheme was part of the organisation's community social responsibility initiative, aimed at developing talents for the ICT industry.
He further revealed that this scheme supports educational bodies to encourage and cultivate talents in the telecom field. By equipping them with sufficient knowledge about telecom technology, it will bridge the digital divide among communities, regions and countries through education.
Wei Chengmin stated that the University of Lagos was chosen due to its exemplary contributions to ICT education in the country and its continuous adoption and deployment of ICT in every area of its business.
The scholarship is open to 200 – 400 level students of the targeted five ICT-related departments, with three students emerging from each of the departments.
