BRUSSELS (dpa) – Belgium police went on alert on Tuesday after an arson attack on a mosque in the capital Brussels killed an imam, the Belga news agency reported. Police were ordered to patrol areas near mosques in the Brussels neighborhood of Anderlecht. Abdallah Baddou, a 46-year-old imam, died from smoke inhalation after an arsonist set fire to the Rida Shiite mosque in the city on Monday night. A second person was treated for smoke inhalation and a third, who managed to escape, suffered knife wounds. Belga said a Muslim illegal immigrant in his thirties is being questioned by police over the incident. Witnesses told Belga Sunni Muslims might have been behind the attack on the Shiite mosque. Interior Minister Joelle Milquet told the RTBF broadcaster she believed the detained suspect was a radical Islamist. “My thoughts are with the victim and his relatives, but I firmly condemn the violence employed during this incident,” Prime Minister Elio di Rupo told Belga. A march to commemorate Baddou and call for tolerance and dialogue is to be held in the Belgian capital on Sunday, the news agency said.
