LONDON: At least one person was killed after a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a mosque in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Monday early evening, eyewitnesses told Bikyamasr.com. “I just heard the sound of something crashing and when I looked around it seemed like a fire had begun,” the witness said. Police are saying the attack is arson, but Muslims in the area are demanding the charges for those responsible be a hater crime, as a sheikh from another mosque said “it was an obvious deliberate attack against Muslims.” The person reported dead was the mosque's imam in the Anderlecht area. A witness saw a man setting fire to a mosque in the Anderlecht area at around 1745 GMT, the Belga news agency quoted authorities as saying. Anderlecht Mayor Vincent Van Goidsenhove said the attack was carried out using a Molotov-cocktail-type bomb. Police said they had arrested one suspect. Belga reported that about 50 people had gathered around the mosque after the incident. The witness said the situation was calm late into the night, “although people are quite sad at what happened and some very angry.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/EiSmG Tags: Attack, Brussels, featured, Hate Crime, Islam, Mosque Section: Europe, Latest News, Religion
