LAGOS: A suicide bomber attacked a church in Nigeria's northern city of Jos on Sunday, killing at least 7 people, the National Emergency Relief Agency (NEMA) said. “It was pure chaos. We were just at church and the explosion sent us flying. I saw people dead,” one eyewitness told Bikyamasr.com. Four attackers also died in the blast. Among the victims were believed to be members of the church's boy scout brigade. Another witness said at least one of the attackers arrived by car at the St Finbars Catholic church, was denied access by security men “and shortly after, I heard a loud bang, with smoke and debris littered everywhere.” The radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has mounted a series of deadly attacks against Christian targets in recent months. A spokesman for the group was unavailable to comment on the attack as of Sunday afternoon. A similar attack on the Christian Church of God (COCIN) in Jos last month left 3 people dead. Boko Haram also claimed responsibility for a January 20 blast in Kano, the country's second-largest city, which left 186 people dead. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and one of its largest oil exporters, is under pressure to contain Boko Haram's growing insurgency and avoid slipping into a civil war along religious and ethnic lines.
