NEW DELHI (dpa): Violent protests erupted in India-administered Kashmir Saturday after a man was run over by an army truck, news reports said. A mob torched the army vehicle and injured two soldiers after the accident in the town of Khannabal, 55 kilometers south of the state capital of Srinagar, IANS news agency reported, citing police. Yasir Ahmad Wani, 27, died on the spot, a senior police official was quoted as saying. Local youths set the truck on fire and pelted stones at the army convoy, which was passing through the area, police said. Police managed to evacuate army personnel on board the truck before it was set on fire. The situation in the area was tense but under control, the police said. India-administered Kashmir has had a large presence of armed forces since a secessionist militant movement broke out in the 1980s. There are regular demonstrations against troops in the region. Indian military forces have been accused by human rights groups of using excessive force and torture. More than 45,000 people – including civilians, militants and soldiers – have died in India-administered Kashmir in the past two decades.
