New Delhi (dpa) – Three soldiers died in Indian-administered Kashmir after a group of paramilitary troops opened fire on each other, a news report said Sunday. The shooting took place in the barracks of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in southern Kulgam district on Saturday night following an altercation, according to broadcaster NDTV. While two soldiers died on the scene, one more succumbed to his injuries en route to hospital. A fourth soldier was hospitalized. The CRPF said it had ordered an investigation. The shooters were yet to be identified and six soldiers had been detained for questioning. There has been a large presence of troops in Kashmir since an insurgency broke out in the 1980s. The government has never released any figures, but according to unofficial estimates at least 300,000 soldiers are posted in the region of which 70,000 are paramilitary troops. Army officials have, in the past, blamed shootouts and soldier suicides on high stress because of the hostile conditions and long separation from their families.
