COLOMBO (dpa) A soldier shot dead two of his comrades before turning the gun on himself in the former war-torn north of Sri Lanka on Friday, the military said. The three were found dead of gunshot wounds at a Hindu temple they were guarding in Chavakachcheri, 350 kilometers north of the capital, spokesman Brigadier Nihal Hapuaarachchi said. Technical evidence, including an examination of the firearm used, had revealed that it was a shooting followed by a suicide, he said. “We can rule out an involvement of an outside party.” The army maintains a strong presence in the northern areas formerly held by the Tamil separatists, after a 26-year civil war ended in 2009 when government troops defeated the last of the rebels.
