Colombo (dpa) – The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, arrived in Sri Lanka Sunday on a two-day visit aimed at increasing investments in tourism and trade, officials said. The emir, who was accompanied by an entourage of 80 people including 30 businessmen, was welcomed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Qatar has shown interest in investing in a hotel project in the islands off Kalpitiya, along the north-western coast, which were opened to tourism development projects in the past year. Sri Lanka and Qatar are expected to sign seven agreements in the areas of investment, trade, culture and the industrial sector, officials said. Sri Lanka is looking at attracting investment in the hospitality trade to attract more tourists to the country after the end of the war against Tamil separatists two-and-a-half years back.
