LAGOS: Mr. Tomisin Fashina an expert in Information Technology disclosed recently at the official launch of Yookos, a new micro blogging social media in Nigeria that the nation needs about 116 million citizens presence on the World Wide Web to bridge the current digital gap which lies between the country and the world. He revealed one of the reasons that gave birth to Yookos, an African home-grown social networking which was to encourage Nigerians and Africans to access the Internet more. He further said there was need for the country to address high cost of acquiring devices as well as the cost of Internet access which are on the high side so as to get more people on-line. Because findings have revealed that only 35 percent of people have access to the Internet across Africa in which Nigeria has just 3.5 percent of the ratio. Fashina stated that this trend indicates opportunities are abound and there are platforms to create chances for people in getting into the World Wide Web as 116 million users is required to be accessing the Internet from Nigeria alone for the gap to be bridged. Of the country's vast population, only 44 million Nigerians access the Internet now.. Mobile phone users are between 80 to 90 million while mobile phone penetration is 100/150 percent in the world, yet Internet penetration remains very low in the country, he noted.
