CAIRO: Some 150 Members of Egypt's People's Assembly and Shura Council, the two chambers of Parliament, demanded the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), during a joint session, issue a pardon in all the politically motivated cases that had been “fabricated during the former regime of the ousted President Hosni Mubarak,” and also called on the SCAF to use its powers provided by paragraph 9 of Article 56 of the Constitutional Declaration, before opening doors for the presidential elections on March 10. The 150 MPs signed a request that includes a call on SCAF to pardon the leader of Ghad al-Thawra Party, Ayman Nour, where he was charged with forging documents to establish his party, under Mubarak`s rule. The MPs said that the pardon would enable him to exercise his political rights and officially run in the presidential elections. The letter was signed by MPs from the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), al-Nour Party, Free Egyptians Party, Al Adala Party, Al Karama Party, Al Bena` and Tanmiya Party, Al Geel, and Ghad Al Thawra party. Due to Nour's conviction and subsequent jailing during Mubarak's rule, he is currently barred from running in any election, which his supporters claim should be removed due to what they term the fabrication of charges in order to “silence opposition” during Mubarak's time as president. His supporters are hopeful Nour will receive a pardon and allow him to run in Egypt's upcoming presidential vote.
