Beirut (dpa) – Heavy clashes erupted Saturday between Syrian government troops and rebels in the province of Idlib near the border with Turkey, opposition activists said. The government forces were shelling the province as they “combed” several districts hunting for rebels, Mohammed Abdullah, a Syrian activist in the area, told dpa. There were no immediate reports about casualties. Elsewhere, government forces stormed on Saturday villages in the central province of Hama, arresting more than 50 people, according to activists. Abu Imad, an activist based in northern Lebanon, said Syrian troops were on Saturday “terrorizing” residents of the rebel Baba Amr neighborhood in the province of Homs, captured by government forces two days earlier after almost a month under siege. “The thugs of the regime continue to execute young men in Baba Amr. That's why the International Committee of the Red Cross has been barred from the area,” the activist told dpa. “They (the government forces) want to kill as many people as they can before the Red Cross is allowed in,” he added. The Syrian government prevented Friday a Red Cross convoy from delivering humanitarian and medical supplies to Homs.
