Beirut (dpa) – Syrian government forces continued to shell the country's restive areas on Saturday, a day after Western and Arab powers urged Damascus to immediately cease all violence and allow humanitarian agencies to deliver aid to civilians affected by the violence. “Dozens of shells fell on the neighborhood of al-Khalidiyeh, killing four people and setting several houses ablaze,” Omar Homsi, a Syrian activist based in the central province of Homs, told dpa by phone. The shelling eased off during the night, with teams of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the first time managing to enter the restive area of Baba Amr, from where they evacuated 27 people, mostly women and children. The ICRC team, however, failed to rescue two wounded Western journalists or to recover the bodies of two others killed earlier this week. Western and Arab countries attending Friday's “Friends of Syria Conference” in Tunisia have urged tighter restrictions and sanctions on President Bashar al-Assad's regime, but have ruled out any military intervention. More than 100 people were killed on Friday along, according to opposition activists. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/bXaHY Tags: Baba Amr, Homs, ICRC, Rescue, Shelling Section: Latest News, Syria
