CAIRO (dpa) – One pupil died and four others were wounded in a shooting at a high school in the US state of Ohio, police said Monday. The shooter, believed to be acting alone, opened fire in the cafeteria of the school in Chardon before classes were set to begin, injuring five pupils. One of the injured later died, police chief Tim McKenna said in a televised press conference. The shooter, a student at the school, had fled, but was captured by police and remained in custody, he said. He did not provide more details about the condition of the other wounded pupils. Students at the school had been evacuated and the building had been secured by law enforcement. The incident awakened bad memories of the 1999 Columbine massacre, in which two students killed 13 victims and themselves in the worst shooting at a US high school. That event prompted changes in school security nationwide. Chardon is situated some 50 km from the city of Cleveland.
