Tehran (dpa) – Tehran on Saturday rejected comments by British Prime Minister David Cameron that Iran was supplying the Syrian government with weapons to crackdown on its opposition. “Iran categorically denies any military interference in Syria and any comments regarding Iran supplying the Syrian government with weapons are totally baseless,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said in a press statement. The spokesman was referring to comments by Cameron published in a British paper, in which the British prime minister accused Iran of supplying the Syrian government with weapons to control the unrest in that country. “We condemn any violent acts in Syria and our stance has always been support of any reforms which would benefit the people. But at the same time we have always been against any foreign interference in that country,” Mehmanparast continued. Iran has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government since the outbreak of unrest last year, linking the West with efforts to topple the Syrian government and protect Israel. Earlier this month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned leaders in the Arab world not to support Western efforts to topple the al-Assad regime and warned that, after Syria, “it will be their turn to be thrown away by the West like used handkerchiefs.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/sJzTF Tags: Supplies, Tehran, UK, Weapons Section: Europe, Iran, Syria
