CAIRO: Egypt's leading political figure and former presidential hopeful Mohammed ElBaradei described on Tuesday the political situation in Egypt as suffering from a “constitutional travesty.” He demanded a reconsideration of the political roadmap governing the transitional period. “Given the state of the constitutional, political and legal travesty, it is time to reconsider the roadmap which is becoming increasingly complex day after day,” ElBaradei, who announced a few weeks ago, his withdrawal from the presidential race, said on his Twitter account. He questioned the legitimacy of the recently elected Parliament, saying: “how can this parliament select a Constitutional Assembly to draft the constitution, after the rule of the Supreme Administrative Court.” He added that the “Supreme Administrative ruled the illegality of the recent parliamentary elections and referred the matter to the Supreme Constitutional Court. How can this parliament choose the assembly before constitutional rule?” Following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak last year, ElBaradei called for the selection of a presidential council to manage the affairs of the country, and the drafting a constitution and opposed the roadmap set out by the ruling military junta. His remarks came in response to the ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court, on Monday, headed by Judge Agati Magdi, who referred some of the provisions of the Law of the People's Assembly on the election system (one third of it for independent MPs) to the Supreme Constitutional Court to adjudicate on the constitutionality of these provisions.
