DUBAI: Three Italian soldiers died Monday when their armored vehicle capsized while crossing a stream, Defense Ministry officials said in Rome. The accident took place as they were traveling some 20 kilometers from the town of Shindand, in Afghanistan's southwestern Herat province. Around 4,200 Italian troops are deployed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO military mission. Over the past few weeks NATO has reported a number of deaths similar to the recent Italy incident, with commanders hopeful that renewed sense of security will be brought forth through more vigilance. A NATO source in the Gulf told Bikyamasr.com that there needs to be a new effort to “ensure safety” of both soldiers on the ground and civilians in combat and noncombat situations.
