CAIRO: A number of al-Masry football club fans were arrested in the city of Port Said late on Thursday for their involvement in the violence that took the lives of 75 mostly al-Ahly club fans after a match between the two teams earlier this month. Al-Masry won the match 3-1 over al-Ahly, but during and after the match violence was escalating from al-Masry fans who were in their hometown. 13 men were arrested and the prosecutor is investigating the role they played in the clashes. The men were visually identified from the game footage. The men have been detained for 15 days while the investigation takes place. Police had already arrested 52 other men for their participation in the violence. News reports on Friday mentioned that leading figures in the cheering squads, also known as Ultras, were arrested for inciting the violence. According to eyewitnesses at the February 1 match, once the referee blew his whistle, ending the second half of the match, the Masry fans attacked the Ahly fans using iron and wooden clubs, knives, fire crackers and rocks. Police stood by and watched and the stadium cut off power in an attempt to reclaim control over the violence, but it only increased the number of the deaths. No medical help arrived on time, leaving the crowd to suffer for over three hours locked inside the stadium. The game's attendees said police at the gates allowed any and every one in without tickets, filling the stadium to over capacity.
