CAIRO: Egypt's Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi, the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued a decree to fly the Ahly team and their fans on two military planes back to Cairo, according to the state-run MENA news agency. The team and many of the fans remain locked inside the stadium and the players locked inside the locker room, following clashes that left at least 73 people dead and hundreds injured on Wednesday evening. The violence started after the fans of the al-Masry club began attacking the field and the Ahly fans using canes and rocks and flammable fire crackers. One eyewitness told Ahly TV that the Masry fans stormed the Ahly fans side and threw many fans off the high levels of the stadium. Eyewitnesses gave their accounts to local press, giving similar testimonies on how the security forces left the stadium soon after the match ended. Others added that the police present at the match opened the gates, which allowed the Masry fans to descend onto the pitch and attack the players and fans. Ambulances and medical help was not present as many started to die inside the Ahly locker room. Ahly Midfielder Mohamed Baraket told Ahly TV that the locker room was turning into a “morgue.” Ahly fans and other citizens have gathered outside the Ahly club in Cairo and are chanting against the SCAF, demanding swift justice for those killed.
