CAIRO: Egypt's People's Assembly legislative committee decided on Monday to implement a law issued in 1958 that would allow the Parliament to officially accuse a minister and refer them to trial. Previously, ministers in the Egyptian government had immunity from prosecution. The state-run news agency MENA reported that the committee said during a meeting on Monday that the law can be implemented according to a ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court of 1977. The decision comes after arguments about referring ministers to trial after accusing the ministry of interior of negligence in failing to protect the Ultras during the violence that broke out after a football match in Port Said, where more than 75 fans were killed. The controversy over its legal status and possibility of implementation is related to the issuance of the law itself back in 1958, during the unity of Syria and Egypt which lasted for three years, known as “United Arab Republic.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/GJoCr Tags: featured, Immunity, Minister, Parliament Section: Egypt, Latest News
