NAIROBI: Kenya's telecom regulator has rejected the appeal made by telecommunication companies asking for the immediate reduction in their monthly license fees. The Daily Nation reported that the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) turned down the appeal, stating that the rates are appropriate and would not be changed. “Any such cut would risks crippling the CCK's operations by cutting a significant part of its revenue,” said CCK Acting Director General Francis Wangusi, in a statement released from the company. The CCK is lowering licence fees by 41 percent and the annual operating fee from 0.5 percent to 0.45 percent of annual gross turnover from 01 July, but the operators had asked to start paying the lower licence fees immediately. Information Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo had backed the companies' request, saying the CCK's finance concerns could be addressed through the revised budget to be tabled in parliament.
