Editorial: Justin Bieber should be condemned for wearing fur
Published in Bikya Masr on 31 - 01 - 2012

When Justin Bieber walked into Los Angeles International Airport little over one week ago sporting a fur hat, it should have sparked outrage from the animal rights community over the blatant use of fur. Yet, over a week later, there have been no statements on his attire, even from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
The world's largest animal rights organization has been outspoken on celebrities wearing fur, in any form, even going to lengths to tarnish the clothes. Dumping red paint on white fur coats has become a trademark of the animal rights group, but with Bieber, it seems, things aren't as they seem.
Bieber is a supporter of PETA and a vegetarian, which makes the wearing of fur by the young music sensation that much more surprising. It seems giving money to PETA and “doing one's part” in an animal cruelty campaign can ensure the rights group remains silent in the face of one's cruelty laden attire.
The question is, are celebrities like Bieber taking advantage of their deep pockets to keep PETA silent? Had it been Kim Kardashian or Reese Witherspoon, PETA would have issued a statement in condemnation of their cruel clothes. Here, with Bieber, his previous connections with PETA seem have avoided their attack.
This should be unacceptable. However inspiring Bieber may be, his vegetarian diet and his support of anti-animal cruelty campaigns, should be no excuse to his adorning himself with a fur hat. Simply unacceptable and PETA, which aspires to be the moral guide for the animal rights community, must speak out and tell the world they will not support Bieber or any other star's wearing of fur.
We all know the horrors of the fur industry, so does Bieber, and certainly PETA does as well. This hypocrisy must end if the fur industry is to continue its decline.
How many young girls went out and purchased fur hats as a result of Bieber's wearing of one? Probably many.
