Mutiny is spreading in Yemen
Published in Bikya Masr on 29 - 01 - 2012

SANA'A: As Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh is set to begin a series of medical treatments in the United States following the issuing of immunity for him, his extended family and aides, revolt is brewing in Yemen.
Since President Saleh departed from Yemen about a week ago, his family members have found that their authority is being tested.
General Mohamed Saleh al-Ahmar the Commander of al-Dalaimi air force base on the northern outskirt of Sana'a, the capital, had a shoe thrown at him by an officer, which prompted an uprising.
Despite the quick intervention of the Republican Guards and the Central Security Forces led by Saleh's son and nephew, some 600 officers and soldiers managed to leave the base taking their protest directly to Vice-President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi.
The rebels are demanding the immediate departure of General Mohamed Saleh al-Ahmar, for they say he abused his position by defrauding them of their salaries and allowances.
The move led to an insurgency movement at Air Force bases in Aden and Taiz.
On Sunday, Republican Guards from the 4th Brigade, posted outside Sana'a rose against their commanding officer. The mutiny was violently crushed by those remaining loyal to the regime with anonymous sources claiming that several guards had been killed in the clashes.
Since the elite corps is one the pillars of the regime, led by non-other than Ahmed Ali Saleh, the president's eldest son, many analysts within Yemen are already announcing the death of the regime.
“It is because his family still remains in charge of the armed forces that Saleh has managed so far to remain somewhat in power or at least in an influential political position despite the growing numbers of his detractors. Without the support of the Republican Guards his entire system will collapse and with it his family's hold over Yemen,” a member of the Shurah council under cover of anonymity told Bikyamasr.com.
Several government officials expressed concerned over this new bout of violence urging all parties to refrain from further bloodshed as they say it would endanger the organization of the coming presidential elections and throw Yemen once again in the middle of a political storm.
