CAIRO: The head of Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, reiterated Egypt's commitment to all international conventions and treaties, and emphasized that peace was Egypt's choice. He stressed that the armed forces would not be “tempted or be dragged into any foreign plots that target Egypt and seek to ignite and causes damage to its people,” adding that the armed forces “had to become engaged into politics to protect Egypt from the enemies of the homeland and the people.” Tantawi stated that Egypt is facing “great dangers” and stressed that Egypt will pass this stage with the “help of the strength of its army and the will of its people together.” He urged Egyptians to be “vigilant and be alerted and thwart plots and schemes against Egypt,” confirming that the armed forces are “the backbone that protects Egypt, and the aim of schemes is to infiltrate it.” He reiterated the SCAF intention to hand power over to civilians in June. Tantawi added, after attending the main Nasr 6 military maneuver with live ammunition, which is conducted by the armed forces and lasts for several days, that the armed forces estimate in its combat all the possibilities that the country may face and “always prepares itself for the worst case.” He noted that the basic mission of the Egyptian armed forces is to “defend the borders of Egypt,” and that the participation of military forces in the work of securing the parliamentary elections “does not affect the combat efficiency of the armed forces.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/MmzyR Tags: featured, Israel, SCAF, Tantawi, Treaty Section: Egypt, Latest News
