CAIRO: The head of Egypt's ruling military junta on Monday ordered the release of 90 people previously convicted in controversial military courts and suspending their sentences, state media said. According to the reports, Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) head Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi ordered 90 civilians released from custody. According to local activists and the No Military Trials group, some 12,000 civilians have been tried and sentenced using military trials in the country since the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak in February. Massive outrage over the trials has seen thousands take to the streets demanding they be suspended and not employed against civilians. All civilians convicted by military courts cannot appeal the verdicts, unlike civil trials.
